Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has directed an immediate review of the state’s security strategies following renewed attacks by armed bandits in parts of the state.
The directive followed an emergency security meeting held on Saturday at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, where senior security officials and government representatives assessed recent security incidents and discussed measures to strengthen response operations.
The meeting included top security stakeholders, including the Brigade Commander, the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the State Security Service, the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Commander of the Vigilante Group, and representatives of the Customs and Immigration Services.
Governor Idris expressed concern over the resurgence of armed groups, particularly the Lakurawa faction operating in Wasagu Chiefdom and parts of Argungu Emirate, and said the government was determined to take stronger steps to protect residents and their property.
He stated that the state was reviewing existing security arrangements and introducing additional measures to respond to the renewed wave of attacks, adding that the protection of lives and property remained the government’s top priority regardless of cost implications.
“We must review our existing security strategies and introduce new measures to address the resurgence of banditry in some parts of the state.
“The protection of lives and property remains our top priority, and we are prepared to take every necessary step regardless of the cost implications,” the governor said.
Governor Idris noted that the state government had continued to support security agencies with logistics and manpower development, including training youths for community security operations and providing operational vehicles, motorcycles, and financial support to frontline operatives.
He further disclosed plans to present the State Security Council’s security situation and recommendations to the President, the Ministry of Defence, and military authorities for further action.
He expressed optimism that stronger cooperation between federal and state governments, security agencies, and communities would help restore lasting peace in the affected areas.
While the security meeting was ongoing, a high-powered delegation led by the deputy governor, Umar Abubakar Tafida, was sent to Wasagu Chiefdom to sympathise with victims and assess the security situation on the ground.
The delegation included the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Dangoje; the Emir of Zuru, Muhammad Sanusi Mikailu Sami Gomo III; commissioners; and chairmen of state boards and commissions.
At the palace of the Chief of Wasagu, the deputy governor conveyed the governor’s condolences to affected residents and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to restoring peace and strengthening collaboration with security agencies and community leaders.
“The governor shares in your pain and remains fully committed to restoring peace and security across Wasagu Chiefdom and other affected communities. Government will continue to work closely with security agencies and community leaders to bring an end to these attacks,” Tafida said.
The delegation also visited affected communities and engaged local leaders on ways to improve community participation in security efforts.
