King Charles III called the transatlantic slave trade a “monstrous injustice” as he opened the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.

Addressing leaders from the 56-nation group, the British monarch expressed his “most profound personal sorrow” over the shameful historic era.

He emphasised that history teaches that character and courage can overcome dark chapters, highlighting the Royal Navy’s historical role in ending the international trade in enslaved people.

The leader stated that he remains open to a formal apology, though he explicitly ruled out paying financial reparations.

Instead, the British government is offering structured dialogue to affected communities and proposing a “debt reset” plan for poorer Commonwealth nations, alongside £40 million in Caribbean infrastructure funding.
