Kirchner Takes Corruption Conviction to UN

Former Argentine President Cristina Kirchner announced Wednesday that she is taking her corruption conviction to the UN Human Rights Committee, claiming innocence and alleging a political plot to permanently ban her from public office.

Currently serving a six-year house arrest sentence alongside a lifetime ban from holding office, the 73-year-old requested the UN panel review the judicial proceedings that led to her 2025 conviction over public works contracts.

Kirchner accused the Argentine judiciary of bias and structural machismo, arguing the lifetime political ban aims to deny voters their political choice.

Although the 18-member UN committee cannot legally compel Argentina to overturn the verdict, its decisions carry significant international reputational weight.

The UN filing follows an appeals court decision rejecting her attempt to unfreeze nearly $500 million in seized assets tied to the case.
