The Lagos State Government has improved surveillance and border health screening following the Ebola outbreak in Central and East Africa.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, disclosed the update in a post on his X account on Sunday, assuring residents that no suspected or confirmed Ebola cases have been detected or recorded in the state. Abayomi said the state is closely monitoring the situation and remains fully prepared to respond to any public health threat.

“We are closely monitoring the evolving Ebola outbreak situation in Central and East Africa… we have not seen any cases resembling Ebola in Lagos to date,” he said.

The Lagos Commissioner for Health went further to explain that the state has activated its emergency disease response system, described as a “Biosecurity Bio-shield,” to quickly detect and contain infectious diseases.

He added that the Emergency Operations Centre and the Lagos State Infectious Disease Hospital are on standby, while screening has been intensified at airports, seaports, and land borders.

Residents returning from affected countries and showing symptoms were advised to contact emergency health lines immediately; call 767 or 112, or contact the State Epidemiologist on 08023169485.

In Central and East Africa, at least 177 deaths and about 700 suspected cases have been recorded in the affected region.
