Landslides have killed five people, including four children, after 48 hours of heavy rainfall devastated Ikot Anwatim Community in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State, Nigeria.

According to the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA), the disaster also destroyed two houses and left two residents injured.

CR-SEMA confirmed the casualties on Saturday during a rapid assessment of the affected area led by its Director-General, Efa Nyong, alongside officials from the Nigerian Red Cross Society’s Disaster Management Unit.

Nyong expressed condolences to the families of the victims and described the deaths, especially those of the four children, as heartbreaking.

He assured affected residents that the state government would provide support through humanitarian interventions.

“This assessment will document the disaster’s impact to guide government decisions on emergency assistance and long-term disaster risk reduction,” Nyong said.

He urged residents in landslide-and erosion-prone areas to report ground cracks, remain alert, and follow evacuation instructions when necessary.

Nyong warned that climate-related disasters are becoming more frequent, stressing the need for stronger cooperation between communities and government agencies.

The assessment team recommended immediate relief support for affected families, continued medical care for injured victims and a detailed geological study of the area to determine long-term safety measures.

The team also called for increased public awareness of landslide risks and possible relocation of residents living in high-risk locations as rainfall continues.

Residents appealed for urgent assistance, saying bereaved and displaced families are facing major challenges as they begin to recover from the tragedy.
