Nigeria Condoles China Over Gansu Landslide

The Nigerian Government has offered its condolences to China after the tragic landslide in Tanchang County, Gansu Province, which resulted in at least 21 deaths.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nigeria was deeply saddened by the tragedy and extended its sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives, the injured and all those affected by the disaster.

The statement, signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said Nigeria was keeping the victims and their families in its thoughts as rescue operations continued.

“The Government of Nigeria expresses deep condolences to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China following the tragic landslide that struck Tanchang County in Gansu Province on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

“Nigeria mourns the loss of lives in this disaster, which has claimed at least 21 lives, with others affected amid the rescue operations. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, the injured, and all those who have lost loved ones or property in this unfortunate incident,” the statement said. 

The Nigerian Government also commended the Chinese authorities and emergency responders for their swift response to the incident and their efforts to save lives and provide relief to affected communities.

It reaffirmed Nigeria’s solidarity with China, describing the relationship between both countries as a long-standing strategic partnership founded on mutual respect, friendship and cooperation.

According to the ministry, Nigeria remains confident in China’s resilience as it continues recovery and rehabilitation efforts in the affected areas.

“Nigeria and China share a long-standing strategic partnership built on mutual respect, friendship, and cooperation. Nigeria stands in solidarity with China during this difficult time, and we are confident in the resilience of the Chinese people and government as they work towards recovery and rehabilitation in the affected areas,” the statement said.

The government also prayed for the repose of the victims, the speedy recovery of those injured and comfort for the bereaved families.
