Basketball player LeBron James begins his record 24th National Basketball Association (NBA) season on Tuesday at age 41, joining the Philadelphia 76ers in pursuit of a fifth championship as the team seeks its first title since 1983.

The 81st NBA season opens with Philadelphia facing the New York Knicks, who will celebrate their first championship since 1973 by raising a title banner.

James made his ambitions clear when he announced his move to Philadelphia on July 24, saying he wanted another opportunity to compete for the NBA crown rather than prioritise financial rewards or family considerations.

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer said he remained motivated by the challenge of competing at the highest level and the prospect of winning another championship.

“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energise a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time,” James said.

“I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.”

His move followed his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, which he announced in June. The 76ers subsequently confirmed a two-year, $8 million contract.

A four-time NBA Most Valuable Player, James won two championships with the Miami Heat, one with the Cleveland Cavaliers and another with the Lakers. He now hopes to add Philadelphia to that list and potentially become the first player to win NBA titles with four different franchises.

James, who turns 42 in December, shares that ambition with teammates Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe, as well as former Boston star Jaylen Brown, who is also seeking his first NBA championship.

He said the team was united by a willingness to work consistently, improve daily and put collective success ahead of individual achievements.

James also expressed hope that he could help Embiid, his teammate on the United States‘ gold-medal-winning team at the 2024 Olympics, take the next step towards winning his first NBA title.

He said he intended to provide Embiid with support and resources to help him feel more comfortable and strengthen the team’s overall performance.

“Everybody is kind of on the same page,” James said. “We want to put the work in. That’s most important.

“Everyone is highly motivated to get 1% better every single day… Everyone is excited to be here and that’s exciting to be a part of.

“If we’re trying to do something special, which I believe we are, it’s a positive. If you have this championship approach every day, it’ll definitely work in our favor.”

James made his preseason debut for Philadelphia in a 114-108 defeat to the Brooklyn Nets, recording 10 points, five assists and four rebounds.

He acknowledged that adjusting to a new team would require time, despite the familiarity of the game itself. The players would need to learn how best to complement one another on the court, he added.

James cautioned against expecting immediate chemistry or quick results, stressing that building a championship team requires sustained effort and patience.

He said the players would need to embrace difficult tasks, maintain their discipline and repeatedly work on areas that required improvement, even when the process became uncomfortable.

James also made clear that he had not joined Philadelphia merely to reach the second round of the playoffs before being eliminated.

He said he was prepared to put in the work required to make the team a genuine championship contender.

“They want instant oatmeal,” James said. “If you want to do something special, it takes time, every single day doing things you may not want to do, because it’s the same thing over and over and over and over.

“For us to be great we have to do things that are just not comfortable. We have to be comfortable being uncomfortable. That’s the best way to expedite being great.

“I didn’t leave my family to lose in the second round I know that for sure. Work needs to be done and I’m ready to put the work in.”

James has career averages of 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 1.5 steals over 1,622 games.
