Liverpool moved a step closer to securing Champions League qualification on Saturday, though they did so in an unconvincing fashion following a 1-1 draw with a struggling Chelsea side.

Despite holding a seven-point lead over sixth-placed Bournemouth with only three games remaining, the lacklustre performance at Anfield drew audible frustration from the home supporters.

The result virtually ensures a top-four finish for the Reds, but the atmosphere remained tense as the defending champions continued their recent dip in form.

The match started with a moment of brilliance when Ryan Gravenberch fired Liverpool into an early lead with a precise strike into the top corner.

However, an injury-depleted forward line—missing the likes of Mohamed Salah and Florian Wirtz—struggled to maintain pressure on the visitors.

Chelsea, who had suffered six consecutive league defeats heading into the weekend, levelled the score before halftime when an Enzo Fernández free-kick bypassed the defence and rolled into the far post.

Liverpool were nearly punished further in the second half, but VAR disallowed a Cole Palmer goal for a marginal offside.

While the Reds struck the woodwork twice in the closing stages through Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk, they could not find a decisive winner.

For Chelsea, the point officially ends any mathematical chance of a top-five finish, though the improved resilience offers interim manager Calum McFarlane a small positive as the team prepares for the upcoming FA Cup final.

The standoff further fuelled discontent among the Anfield crowd, with manager Arne Slot facing particular scrutiny.

The decision to substitute teenage winger Rio Ngumoha was met with derision, and the final whistle was accompanied by a chorus of boos.

While Slot’s previous league success is expected to keep him in his post for the next season, the current struggle to cross the finish line has left fans questioning the team’s direction heading into the summer.
