The Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has condemned the alleged assault, brutalisation and unlawful detention of Professor Eyo Ekpe and other medical staff by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Akwa Ibom State.
The association said it would no longer tolerate harassment, intimidation or victimisation of its members by law enforcement agencies.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Dr Taiwo Alatishe, MDCAN described the incident as a “dehumanising and barbaric display of power” within a hospital environment where doctors were attending to patients.
It said the reported attack on Professor Eyo Ekpe of the Department of Chemical Pathology, UUTH, showed disregard for professional sanctity and human dignity.

“The National Officers Committee of the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria, under the leadership of Prof. Appolos Chidi Ndukuba, expresses its profound indignation and grave concern regarding the reported assault, brutalisation, and unlawful detention of Professor Eyo Ekpe… by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,” the statement read.
MDCAN stressed that hospitals must remain safe spaces dedicated to saving lives and free from intimidation.
It warned that such actions could endanger patients and disrupt healthcare delivery.
The association said it was working with its UUTH chapter and relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure justice is served, while demanding the prosecution of the operatives involved.
It urged members to remain professional and vigilant, while reaffirming its commitment to their welfare and safety.
