Mexico and Peru announced the full restoration of diplomatic relations on Friday, resolving an intense months-long feud over the asylum request of a former Peruvian official accused of coup plotting.

The governments of leftist Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and right-wing Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori issued a joint statement confirming that historical bonds of friendship and cooperation guided their decision to resume formal diplomatic channels.

During her daily press conference, Sheinbaum confirmed that former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chavez was travelling to Mexico aboard a Mexican military aircraft after Fujimori’s administration granted her safe passage as a gesture of goodwill.

The diplomatic reconciliation resolves a rift that originated with the December 2022 impeachment and arrest of former left-wing Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, who attempted to dissolve Congress.

While Castillo remained in custody, Chavez—his former prime minister—faced similar coup charges but obtained bail and entered the Mexican embassy in November 2025 to request asylum.

Chavez’s move ignited retaliatory diplomatic actions from Lima, culminating in Peru’s Congress declaring Sheinbaum persona non grata.

Tensions cooled following Fujimori’s narrow election victory in June and her subsequent inauguration in late July, paving the way for both nations to repair their bilateral relationship.
