The public attack follows Ukraine’s formal accusation earlier this week that Washington is indirectly aiding Moscow by withholding critical missile-strike warnings and disrupting Ukrainian military communications through changes to Musk’s satellite network.
The dispute centres on Starlink, the SpaceX-designed satellite system that Kyiv relies on for battlefield communications.
While Zelensky urgently appealed to Musk to restore full network capabilities following reported speed slowdowns, Musk placed responsibility squarely on the U.S. government.

The tech billionaire distinguished between Starshield—the military-grade network governed by U.S. defence contracts—and Starlink’s civilian service, emphasising that Ukraine cannot deploy civilian Starlink infrastructure for offensive operations.

The fallout coincides with deepening diplomatic friction between Kyiv and Washington after Zelensky publicly acknowledged feeling “betrayed” by U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent diesel-supply deal with heavily sanctioned Russia.
Senior Ukrainian officials further reported that Washington threatened to cut off vital real-time intelligence on Russian missile launches, a claim Trump denied.
Facing high-stakes midterm elections next month amid surging domestic fuel prices, Trump has repeatedly blamed Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries for driving up global supply constraints and energy costs at American pumps.
