The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) urged residents of flood-prone communities across Nigeria on Saturday to relocate to safer grounds immediately as the rainy season intensifies.

Director-General Zubaida Umar warned that heightened rainfall requires at-risk communities to take proactive steps to protect lives and property.

She pressed local populations to activate flood mitigation measures immediately to minimise the environmental and structural impact of the rising waters.

Umar strongly cautioned the public against driving or walking through dangerous floodwaters and advised citizens to stop dumping refuse into vital drainage channels.

To ensure local readiness, the agency directed its zonal directors and heads of operations to intensify community-based awareness campaigns nationwide.

These officials must strengthen ties with state emergency teams and traditional leaders to coordinate swift search and rescue operations where necessary.

The urgent advisory follows a recent warning from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, which flagged 14 states—including Lagos, Adamawa, and Kaduna—for medium flood risk.

Additionally, the Federal Ministry of Environment recently issued a separate flood alert covering 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Both agencies are urging vulnerable residents to remain highly vigilant, monitor official weather updates closely, and evacuate promptly to avoid preventable loss of life.
