Nigeria and the United States have signed an agreement to deepen American investment in Nigeria’s mining sector.
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, disclosed this in a post on X on Wednesday, saying he signed the agreement with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau at the Nigeria Mission House in New York.
According to Alake, the framework is designed to strengthen Nigeria-US cooperation around the country’s mineral resources, which he valued at about $700 billion.

He said the agreement covers geological data and exploration, mineral development and processing, infrastructure, and technical capacity.
Alake said Nigeria must move beyond exporting raw materials and focus on retaining more value from its mineral resources through local processing.
“Nigeria cannot remain a source of raw materials while others capture most of the value,” he said.
The minister said the partnership is expected to support the creation of quality jobs, strengthen technical skills and expand opportunities for Nigerian businesses.
He added that the Nigerian Government would, in the coming months, identify viable projects and develop partnerships that could translate the framework into investments and projects.
“In the coming months, we will turn this framework into projects, investments and real results for our people,” Alake said.
He said the initiative would contribute to Nigeria’s economic diversification and support the mineral development objectives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
