Nigerian senator Orji Uzor Kalu has said that Nigerians are not members of his constituency, while defending his role as a lawmaker and his performance in office.

Kalu made the statement during a NewsCentral’s “60-Minutes with Kay” interview, where he spoke about his constituency projects, representation and the country’s economic challenges.

Responding to questions on why many Nigerians are unaware of the work being done by lawmakers, the former Abia State governor said elected representatives are primarily accountable to the people they represent.

“No, Nigerians are not members of my constituency,” Kalu said.

The senator, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, also defended his performance, saying his constituency projects have received recognition over the years.

“I won the best senatorial project for consistently four years running,” he said.

Kalu said many Nigerians do not fully understand the responsibilities of the National Assembly and the work lawmakers carry out.

“A lot of Nigerians don’t know what the National Assembly is doing,” he said.

On the economy, the senator identified rising fuel prices and foreign exchange challenges as key issues affecting Nigerians.

“There are two things that bother us on this economy, the prices of fuel and the prices of dollar,” he said.

He also criticised Nigeria’s economic dependence on crude oil, arguing that the country has the potential to generate more wealth through other sectors.

“These economies in 1960 have been unproductive economies. I pity our leaders because this is a country that can make so much money without going to crude oil,” Kalu said.
