The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast cloudy conditions and thunderstorms across several parts of the country from Wednesday to Friday.
In its weather outlook released in Abuja on Wednesday, the agency predicted cloudy skies over the northern region, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall expected in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa on Wednesday morning.
Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are also expected in parts of Kaduna and across the North-East later in the day.
NiMet forecast patches of clouds over the North-Central region, with light rain possible in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau and Nasarawa during the morning.
It said thunderstorms with moderate rainfall could occur later in the day across parts of Benue, Kogi, the FCT, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau.
“Patches of clouds are expected over the North-Central region with chances of thunderstorms accompanied by light rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau and Nasarawa states during the morning hours.
“By the afternoon or evening hours, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected over parts of Benue, Kogi, the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau states.
“Cloudy skies are anticipated over the southern region. However, there are chances of light rains over parts of the South-South region during the morning hours,” it said.
Across southern Nigeria, the agency expected generally cloudy conditions, with light rain possible in parts of the South-South during the morning and moderate rainfall later in parts of Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, the South-East and South-South.
For Thursday, NiMet forecast cloudy conditions over the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall expected in parts of Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe.
The agency said thunderstorms with moderate rainfall could affect most parts of the region later in the day.
It also predicted a cloudy atmosphere over the North-Central region, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall possible throughout the forecast period.
Moderate rainfall is expected in parts of Ondo and across the South-South, with additional rainfall forecast over the South-East and South-South later in the day.
“Later in the afternoon or evening hours, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected over most parts of the region.
“A cloudy atmosphere is expected over the North-Central region, with chances of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains across the region throughout the forecast period.
“Moderate rains are expected over parts of Ondo and the entire South-South region. Later in the day, moderate rains are expected over the South-East and the South-South regions,” it said.
On Friday, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms and rainfall in parts of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across the northern region later in the day.
The North-Central region is also expected to experience cloudy conditions, with light rain possible in parts of Nasarawa and Benue in the morning and moderate rainfall later in the day.
“A cloudy atmosphere is expected over the North-Central region, with chances of thunderstorms accompanied by light rains over parts of Nasarawa and Benue states during the morning hours.
“The afternoon or evening period holds prospects for thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over the region. Cloudy skies are anticipated over the southern region, with prospects of light rains over the entire South-South during the morning hours.”
For the southern region, NiMet forecast cloudy skies and light rain across the South-South during the morning, with moderate rainfall expected in parts of Ondo, Oyo, Enugu, Imo, the South-East and South-South later in the day.
The agency warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms and advised residents to secure loose objects to prevent accidents.
NiMet also urged motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances during storms and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches or trees.
Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to support safe and effective flight planning.
The agency further encouraged the public to stay updated through its official weather forecasts.
