North Korea has tested a new precision-guided torpedo system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect targets and guide its movement, state media KCNA reported early Saturday.
The underwater test of the “super-speed” Zam-2.0 system took place on Thursday, with KCNA, saying it was conducted “to confirm the successful technical updating” of the weapon.
The state news agency said AI technology had been added to the torpedo’s target detection and guidance functions.

“AI technology was applied to the target detection and the guidance function of the new-type super-speed precisely guided torpedo,” KCNA said.

The test comes following North Korea’s growing focus on using artificial intelligence in its weapons systems. Earlier this month, the country announced that it had carried out an AI-assisted launch of an intermediate-range hypersonic missile.
In September, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stressed the need to raise “the level of artificial intelligence” in the country’s weapons systems. Meanwhile, analysts have said North Korea may be advancing its missile technology with support from Russia.
They believe Moscow could be providing military assistance in exchange for Pyongyang sending troops to support Russia’s war against Ukraine. However, KCNA’s report did not provide further details about the torpedo test or explain how the AI system would perform in combat.
