The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has dismissed as false and misleading a viral infographic claiming that the government has imposed a new vehicle tax effective July 1.
NRS said in a statement by Dare Adekambi, special adviser to the NRS chairman and spokesperson for the service, that the infographic directing vehicle owners to pay an unstated tax rate online or at approved banks and agencies did not come from the service.
“The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the service or any government agency,” Adekambi said.
According to Adekambi, the material bore no identifiable author and further directed members of the public to a website for more information.
He noted that the correct official website of the NRS is different.
Adekambi said the national government had not introduced any fresh tax on vehicles as claimed in the material.
“Citizens are, therefore, advised to disregard the fabricated messages designed to mislead the public and instead rely on official government channels for information on government policies,” he said.
Adekambi cautioned the public not to rely on anonymous images circulating online, but to trust only information distributed through reputable official government or agency channels.
He claimed that the infographic’s verdict was untrue and urged Nigerians to follow the NRS’s official accounts on all social media sites and its website to get accurate information about taxes and its operations.
