The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has described Spain’s victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a fitting birthday gift, saying the triumph shows the power of youth, competence and excellence.

In a post on his X page on Sunday following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, Obi congratulated the new world champions and said the tournament ended with the best team lifting the trophy.

According to him, Spain’s success was another reminder that young people can achieve remarkable feats when they are nurtured, entrusted with responsibility and given the opportunity to lead.

“The FIFA World Cup concluded successfully today, with the best team emerging victorious.

“This is yet another fitting birthday gift, further demonstrating that the youth have not only arrived but are proving that excellence, when given the opportunity, will always prevail,” Obi said.

Obi said the tournament showcased competence, capacity, character and capability at the highest level, stressing that the same values should guide leadership and governance in Nigeria.

“Today, competence, capacity, character, and capability were on full display. It is a powerful reminder that when young people are properly nurtured, entrusted with responsibility, and given the opportunity to lead, they deliver outstanding results,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to replicate the spirit displayed at the World Cup across every sector of national life, expressing optimism that the country could achieve greater progress by empowering its young people.

“This is the spirit we must replicate across every sector of our national life. A New Nigeria is Possible, and it must be reflected in every endeavour that brings pride, progress, and honour to our nation,” he added.
