The Oyo State Police Command has arrested four suspected members of a truck-hijacking syndicate and recovered a SINO HOWO truck allegedly stolen from its driver along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) arrested the suspects during an intelligence-led operation after receiving information that the syndicate planned to operate in the state on August 24.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga directed the VCRU to mount a stop-and-search operation along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following the intelligence.
The operation led to the interception of a white SINO HOWO truck and the arrest of two suspects: Ojedokun Olakunle Isaac, the motor boy attached to the truck driver, and his alleged accomplice, Ajuwon Ismail.
Police said the truck had already had its back body, or bucket, removed and was being driven towards the Ogbomoso-Ilorin axis for delivery to an alleged criminal receiver.
The command said Ojedokun confessed during interrogation to masterminding the hijacking of the truck from his employer along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
His alleged confession provided further leads that enabled police operatives to track down and arrest two other suspects identified as Adekunle Sunday and Rasheed Music.
According to the police, Sunday served as the syndicate’s designated driver whenever trucks were hijacked, allegedly driving stolen vehicles to their intended receivers.
Music, on the other hand, allegedly specialised in removing vehicle trackers and other electronic devices used to identify and locate the trucks.
Police said this role was intended to frustrate efforts to trace and recover the stolen vehicles.
Further investigation, according to the command, showed that the syndicate hijacked the truck at about 11 pm on August 24 and diverted it towards the Ogbomoso-Ilorin axis for onward sale.
“The intelligence-led intervention of the VCRU operatives disrupted the syndicate’s plan and resulted in the recovery of the vehicle,” the statement said.
Police said efforts were ongoing to recover the truck’s detached back body and arrest other members of the syndicate who remain at large.
The Commissioner of Police commended members of the public for providing what he described as timely and credible information that contributed to the operation.
