Polaris Bank has dismissed reports claiming that 34 people died in a fire incident at its Broad Street branch on Lagos Island, describing the reports as false and misleading.
In a statement on Thursday, the bank said the fire started from a customer’s vehicle parked on the third floor of the building’s car park and was quickly brought under control after emergency response measures were activated.

The bank said firefighters responded promptly to the incident and confirmed that no casualties or fatalities were recorded.
“A fire incident occurred today at the car park of our Broad Street Branch, Lagos, originating from a customer’s vehicle parked on the 3rd-floor car park.
“The fire was swiftly contained following the activation of our emergency response procedures and the prompt intervention of firefighters.
“We confirm that there were no casualties or fatalities. Reports claiming that over 34 persons were feared dead are false and misleading. Investigations into the incident are ongoing,” the statement read.
Polaris Bank urged the public to disregard reports of multiple deaths, stating that investigations into the cause of the fire were still ongoing.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service had earlier confirmed that it responded to a fire at the 17-storey Polaris Bank building located at 61/65 Broad Street, Lagos Island.
According to the agency’s Controller General, Margaret Adeseye, the fire affected a stationary saloon car parked on the third-floor parking facility, with firefighters from the Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations deployed to contain the blaze.
Adeseye said the only damage recorded was to the affected vehicle and its immediate surroundings, adding that no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Authorities have continued investigations to determine the cause.
