The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested members of a suspected one-chance kidnapping and robbery syndicate and recovered N8.8 million allegedly collected as ransom from a female victim in Abuja.

According to the police, the victim was abducted after boarding a vehicle operated by the gang.

The kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom from her family and eventually received N8.8 million before releasing her.

Speaking during a briefing, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said the command intensified efforts against one-chance operations following directives from the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi.

She explained that the command received a distress call during the victim’s captivity and immediately deployed its tracking unit to monitor communications between the suspects and the victim’s family.

Although the victim was released after the ransom was paid, police operatives continued to track the syndicate, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the full amount.

Investigations revealed that the gang deliberately targeted women, believing they were less likely to resist during attacks.

One of the suspects admitted that the group had extorted various sums from previous victims, ranging from hundreds of thousands of naira to millions.

Police also arrested a female suspect linked to the gang, who allegedly confirmed that her boyfriend drove one of the vehicles used in the criminal operations. She further admitted that one of the recovered vehicles was specifically used for one-chance activities.

Items recovered from the suspects include the N8.8 million ransom, two operational vehicles, mobile phones and other belongings suspected to have been stolen from victims.

The police said investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be charged in court after the completion of the investigation.
