The Anambra State Police Command has issued a flood alert to residents, urging parents, guardians and caregivers to take extra precautions to protect schoolchildren as heavy rainfall and flooding continue in parts of the state.
In a statement on Wednesday, the command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the warning followed recent flooding that resulted in the death of a school pupil.
The victim, Success Ezenwafor, a pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, was swept away by floodwaters in Isiagu, Awka South Local Government Area.

Success was on his way to school last Tuesday when the school bus conveying him and other occupants became trapped and overturned in the floodwaters.
Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command, working with concerned residents, rescued nine other occupants of the vehicle, comprising seven schoolchildren and two adults.
The survivors were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, for medical attention.
Success, however, was swept away by the floodwaters and remained missing until his remains were recovered the following morning.
The police subsequently urged residents, particularly those responsible for children, to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as rainfall and flooding persist across affected areas.
