The Kano State Police Command has rescued 10 passengers after suspected bandits attacked a Jos-Kano highway route in Doguwa Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Abdullahi Kiyawa, revealed that the incident occurred on Sunday, July 26, at about 5:30 p.m. along the Folgore Forest axis between Gate Two Safer Highway and Dogo Dutse.
According to the police, a Toyota Hiace bus travelling from Jos to Kano was intercepted by five armed men carrying machetes and a firearm.
The attackers reportedly blocked the highway, assaulted the vehicle and abducted 13 of the 20 passengers onboard before tactical police teams were deployed following a distress call received by the Divisional Police Officer of Doguwa Division.
The operatives engaged the assailants in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat.
The police said nine passengers were rescued during the operation, while another male victim later escaped from the kidnappers’ custody, bringing the total number of rescued victims to 10.
The rescued passengers were taken to Doguwa General Hospital for medical checks and are currently receiving treatment in stable condition.
The command said additional tactical teams have been deployed and intelligence-led operations intensified to rescue the remaining three victims and arrest the fleeing suspects.
Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, commended members of the public for providing information that assisted the rescue operation.
He assured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, particularly vulnerable groups, and urged citizens to report suspicious activities to security agencies.
The police added that investigations into the attack are ongoing, promising further updates as developments emerge.
