Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Igor Klymenko, announced on Sunday that two police officers have been suspended following a deadly shooting in Kyiv.

The disciplinary action was prompted by a video circulating online that appears to show the uniformed officers fleeing the scene of a supermarket hostage situation as gunfire erupted.

The attack, which occurred on Saturday in a residential district, resulted in the deaths of six people before the gunman was killed during his arrest.

Minister Klymenko condemned the officers’ actions on Telegram, labelling their conduct a “shameful disgrace” to the national police system.

While he promised a thorough investigation into the incident, he also cautioned the public against judging the entire police force based on the behaviour of two individuals.

He emphasised that the focus must remain on accountability and maintaining the integrity of the law enforcement system during such crises.

Regarding the perpetrator, the minister noted that the attacker appeared to be in an unstable mental state and questioned how he was able to maintain a legal firearm permit.

Although Klymenko ruled out immediate sweeping checks on all legal gun owners, he committed to hosting expert discussions with lawmakers and the public to review gun control legislation.

Despite the ongoing pressures of the war, Ukraine has generally maintained a low crime rate, making this high-casualty event a significant shock to the capital.
