French police have detained more than 280 people in Paris on Saturday after violent clashes broke out during celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) Champions League final win.
According to the French interior ministry, a total of 416 people were arrested nationwide, including 283 in Paris. Authorities said seven police officers were injured during the unrest, which also led to damage to vehicles and businesses.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the violence as “absolutely unacceptable.” According to an AFP report, some fans stormed the Paris ring road, the périphérique, blocking traffic and setting off flares during the celebrations.

About 20,000 people gathered on the Champs-Élysées to celebrate PSG’s penalty shootout victory in Budapest. Security was tight across the city, with 22,000 police deployed nationwide, including 8,000 in Paris, following concerns over possible unrest. Tram lines were suspended, metro stations were closed, and bus routes were disrupted to prevent further disturbances.
Police added that fireworks, flares, and projectiles were thrown at officers, while a bakery and restaurant near the Parc des Princes stadium were also damaged. Some supporters also attempted to build barricades using rental bikes, but police quickly cleared them and used tear gas to disperse crowds.
The unrest came during a busy night in Paris, with major events including a concert by Aya Nakamura, a performance by rapper Damso, and the ongoing French Open tennis tournament.
Despite the violence, officials say preparations are ongoing for a victory parade on Sunday at the Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower, where about 100,000 fans are expected to gather.
