Resident doctors at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Ogun State, have commenced a three-day warning strike over a security breach and burglary at their House Officers’ Quarters.
In a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting on Thursday, the Association of Resident Doctors said the decision was reached unanimously due to concerns about safety in the hospital environment.
The statement was signed by the President, Olanipekun Arise-Kola, and Assistant General Secretary, Olufemi Alawode.
“Following an emergency meeting convened by members of the Association, it was unanimously resolved that the current security situation poses a significant threat to the safety, welfare, and property of the members,” the communiqué read.

The doctors said they were deeply dissatisfied with repeated security lapses and the lack of effective preventive measures. They added that the breach had put the safety and welfare of healthcare workers at serious risk.
The warning strike, which began on June 4, is expected to end on June 6, unless their demands are met. The doctors are demanding the immediate replacement of stolen items, improved security arrangements, the installation of CCTV cameras, better lighting, and the deployment of armed security personnel.
Also, they called for a police post near the quarters, stronger perimeter fencing, and regular night patrols. While acknowledging the impact of the industrial action, the doctors said they remained committed to cordial relations with management but insisted that staff safety must be prioritised.
In response, a statement by the Director of Administration, E. K. Apanisile, said that management was engaging with relevant authorities to address the situation and ensure that services are not severely disrupted.
