Russian bombardment has killed at least six people and wounded dozens in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and surrounding areas, Ukrainian authorities have said, following a major overnight missile attack that hit residential neighbourhoods and civilian infrastructure.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the attack struck several parts of the city, damaging residential buildings, a medical facility and an educational institution. City military authorities reported that five people were killed and 23 others wounded in the capital.
The wider Kyiv region was also affected. In the Brovary district, one person was killed and another wounded, according to regional governor Tymur Tkachenko.
“One industrial facility has been damaged. All relevant services are on site, working to extinguish the fire,” Tkachenko said.

Ukraine’s Air Force had earlier warned of Russian Kalibr cruise missiles detected near the village of Kagarlyk in the Kyiv region, with the weapons moving towards the capital.
The attack comes as both Russia and Ukraine have intensified strikes in recent months during the ongoing war. Moscow has increased its long-range missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian towns and cities, while Kyiv has expanded retaliatory operations targeting locations inside Russia.
Ukrainian officials have said the strikes on Russian territory are partly intended to increase pressure on Moscow and encourage negotiations after more than four years of fighting.
Kyiv has faced repeated overnight attacks throughout the conflict, with residents regularly taking shelter as air raid alerts are activated across the country.
The latest bombardment adds to the continued destruction caused by the war, which has seen civilian areas, energy facilities and critical infrastructure repeatedly targeted since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
