Arsenal right winger Bukayo Saka propelled the club into its first Champions League final in two decades by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

The decisive strike, which came late in the first half at a raucous Emirates Stadium, secured a 2-1 aggregate win for the Gunners.

This victory marks a historic return to the tournament’s showpiece for the first time since 2006, as the club continues its pursuit of an unprecedented European and domestic double.

The match-winner arrived in the 44th minute when Saka reacted quickest to a parried save from Jan Oblak, slotting the ball home from close range.

While Atletico Madrid pressured for an equaliser in the second half, the Arsenal defence held firm to protect the narrow lead.

Mikel Arteta’s side will now travel to Budapest on May 30 to face either Bayern Munich or the defending champions, Paris Saint-Germain.

This achievement places the current squad on the verge of immortality, as they lead the Premier League and stand just one win away from a maiden Champions League crown.

After years of criticism regarding their mental fortitude, the Gunners have silenced detractors by reaching the final during their most successful campaign in recent memory.

Manager Arteta, who had long visualised this success, praised the fans for providing the “standards” and energy that fuelled the team’s historic night.
