The United States has issued a security alert for its citizens in Mexico’s western state of Michoacan following reports of roadblocks and criminal activity that authorities say could escalate.
In the advisory issued on Friday, the US Embassy said local security forces had been placed on alert following the developing situation and reminded Americans that Michoacan remains under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory.
The embassy also reminded US citizens that the State Department’s Travel Advisory for Michoacan is Level 4 – Do Not Travel.
The advisory urged Americans to avoid areas where law enforcement operations are ongoing and to remain vigilant.
Among the recommended precautions, the embassy advised US citizens to be aware of their surroundings and minimise unnecessary movements.
It also urged people to seek shelter in the event of signs of disturbances, avoid crowds, and monitor local media for updates.
The embassy encouraged citizens to follow the instructions of Mexican authorities, keep relatives informed of their whereabouts, and monitor potential disruptions to roads, airports and public events.
It further advised Americans to enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrollment Program (STEP), contact the US Embassy if they require assistance and call Mexico’s emergency number, 911, in the event of an emergency.
Michoacan has long been one of Mexico’s most volatile states because of the presence of powerful organised crime groups engaged in drug trafficking, extortion, illegal mining and fuel theft.
Rival criminal organisations frequently clash over control of territory, while security forces regularly conduct operations targeting cartel members.
Violence in the state often leads to roadblocks, vehicle burnings and disruptions to transportation as criminal groups attempt to hinder the movement of security forces or retaliate against government operations.
Such incidents have periodically affected major highways and nearby communities, prompting authorities to advise residents and travellers to avoid affected areas.
Because of persistent security risks, the US Department of State maintains a Level 4 – Do Not Travel advisory for Michoacan, its highest travel warning.
