A wooden pirogue carrying migrants capsized off the coast of northwestern Senegal, killing at least 34 people in the latest tragedy along the Atlantic migration route.

The boat overturned near the Loumpoul dunes between Dakar and Saint-Louis.

Emergency teams and local human rights groups recovered dozens of bodies—primarily Senegalese nationals—while rescue workers continue searching for an unknown number of missing passengers.

In response, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye mobilised all available state resources to rescue survivors and assist grieving families.

The disaster underscores the growing crisis along the West Africa-to-Canary Islands route, where thousands risk their lives annually to reach Europe.

Increased maritime patrols by Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco have pushed smugglers further south toward Gambia and Guinea, significantly lengthening the perilous open-ocean journey.

Senegalese authorities, who intercepted another vessel carrying 142 migrants on Friday, pledged to step up cooperation with regional neighbours to dismantle human smuggling networks.

Meanwhile, Spanish officials on El Hierro Island declared an emergency following the arrival of over 3,300 migrants in early November.
