A Senegalese court has sentenced a school teacher, Serigne Khadim Mbacke, to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing 28 girls, local media reported on Tuesday.

Mbacke was convicted of “rape and paedophilia” involving girls at the religious school where he taught in Touba, central Senegal.

The school teacher was sentenced at the high court in Diourbel region, where Touba is located, the Senegalese Press Agency (APS) said, noting that the judge had followed the prosecutor’s call for a 20-year jail term.

The case was uncovered when one of the girls refused to return to school, saying the Mbacke “was having sexual relations with her and all the other girls”. In 2023, Mbacke was on the run but turned himself in to the police several weeks later.

Earlier this year, police announced that they had dismantled an international child sex abuse ring operating between Senegal and France and allegedly led by a Frenchman.
