Senegal's Faye Elected ECOWAS Chairman

Senegal’s president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has been elected chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

Faye emerged as the new chairman during the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), held in Sierra Leone.

His election places him at the helm of the 15-member regional bloc at a time when West Africa continues to grapple with security challenges, economic integration efforts and political transitions in parts of the region.

As chairman, Faye is expected to provide leadership on key regional priorities, including strengthening democratic governance, promoting economic cooperation, enhancing regional security and advancing dialogue with member states facing political instability.

The ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government is the organisation’s highest decision-making body and is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the bloc.

Faye’s emergence follows deliberations by regional leaders at the summit, where issues affecting peace, security, trade and development across West Africa were discussed.

His tenure comes as ECOWAS continues efforts to reinforce regional unity and address evolving political and security challenges affecting member states.
