Senegal’s Faye Visits Mali For Security Talks

Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has arrived in Mali for an official visit focused on strengthening security cooperation and improving trade between the two countries.

Faye arrived on Tuesday for talks with Mali’s military leader, General Assimi Goïta, as both countries seek closer collaboration on regional security and economic issues.

The discussions are expected to focus on the worsening security situation in the Sahel, military cooperation and freight transport.

Mali relies heavily on the Port of Dakar in Senegal for the import of goods.

However, the movement of cargo has been disrupted in recent months due to repeated terrorist attacks along key transport routes.

Earlier this year, Mali announced that it had joined forces with Niger and Burkina Faso to carry out joint air strikes against terrorists as part of efforts to improve regional security.

Goïta has led Mali since 2021 after seizing power in a military coup.

Faye’s visit highlights ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen security cooperation and ensure safer trade routes following persistent instability in the region.
