Tennis icon Serena Williams is set to make a highly anticipated return to competitive tennis later this month after tournament organisers confirmed she will compete in the women’s doubles event at Queen’s Club.
The 44-year-old American, who owns 23 Grand Slam singles titles, has not played a professional match since her third-round defeat at the 2022 US Open, a tournament many believed marked the end of her legendary career.
Speculation about a comeback has gathered momentum in recent months, particularly after it emerged in December that Williams had re-entered the anti-doping testing programme, a mandatory requirement for players seeking to compete on the professional circuit again.
Queen’s organisers announced on Monday that Williams has been granted a wild card entry into the women’s doubles draw. Reports suggest she is expected to partner rising Canadian player Victoria Mboko, adding another layer of intrigue to her comeback.
Williams also appeared to tease the announcement on social media, posting the message, “Good news travels fast,” alongside a video of her back on court in an all-white Nike tennis outfit, her phone buzzing continuously in the background.
For Williams, the return carries special significance, with the grass-court setting evoking some of the defining moments of her career.
“Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,” Williams said following the announcement.
“Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”
Widely regarded as one of tennis’s greatest players, Williams has enjoyed extraordinary success on grass courts, particularly at Wimbledon, where she captured seven singles titles.
