Italian professional tennis player Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open due to a right knee injury, dealing another blow to the tournament’s men’s draw.
The Italian, who won the Cincinnati Open in 2024, also missed the ongoing National Bank Open in Montreal.
His last appearance came at Wimbledon in July, where he won the title.
Sinner said he made the decision after consulting his doctors and team.
“After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,” Sinner said in a statement released by the tournament.
“My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I’m not ready to compete yet,” he added.
Sinner said he was disappointed to miss the tournament but would now focus on recovering ahead of the US Open.
“I’m very disappointed not to be able to play in Cincinnati and wish Bob Moran and his whole team a great and successful event. I can’t wait to be back next year and I’m now focusing on getting ready for the US Open,” he said.
Sinner’s withdrawal means neither of last year’s Cincinnati finalists will compete in this year’s tournament.
World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Sinner to win the 2025 title, withdrew on August 7 as he continues to recover from a wrist injury suffered in April.
Sinner and Alcaraz have dominated men’s tennis in recent years, winning 10 of the last 11 Grand Slam titles since the start of 2024.
Sinner has also enjoyed a strong 2026 season, winning every ATP Masters 1000 tournament and Grand Slam since March except the French Open.
With both stars absent, world No. 2 Alexander Zverev will be the highest-ranked player in the Cincinnati men’s draw, followed by world No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime.
