The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has challenged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to publicly release the video of the alleged interrogation of President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, over the controversy surrounding the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC).
In a post shared on X on Tuesday, Sowore questioned the credibility of reports that the anti-corruption agency had interrogated Gbajabiamila, insisting that only the release of the complete footage would convince Nigerians that the exercise took place.
“If the ICPC truly interrogated Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, they should release the full, unedited video recording to the public now,” said Sowore.
He dismissed reports of the alleged interrogation as insufficient, suggesting they were intended to deflect public scrutiny.
“All these gimmicks won’t work. We know this is just another smokescreen,” he added.
Sowore’s demand follows growing scrutiny of the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, an organisation that the Presidency has disowned, saying it is not an authorised government agency.
The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee investigating the council has been taking testimony from government officials over the body’s activities and its purported links to senior public office holders.
During one of its hearings, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told lawmakers it had no relationship with the PFIPC and had rejected repeated requests from the organisation after due diligence raised concerns about its authenticity.
The ministry also disclosed that the Office of the National Security Adviser informed it that enquiries through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President found that the council’s alleged Director-General, Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, was unknown to the Nigerian Government.
The PFIPC controversy has also drawn attention to alleged letters, endorsements and interactions purportedly involving government institutions and senior officials.
Although some reports and political actors have sought to link Gbajabiamila to the affair because of documents allegedly bearing the Office of the Chief of Staff, no court or investigative agency has publicly established that the Chief of Staff committed any wrongdoing, and no charges have been announced against him.
The Presidency has consistently maintained that the PFIPC is not an official government body.
