European champions Spain endured a frustrating start to their 2026 World Cup campaign after being held to a goalless draw by tournament debutants Cabo Verde in Atlanta.
Despite entering the competition as one of the favourites, Spain failed to convert their dominance of possession into goals, reviving memories of disappointing World Cup exits in recent years. Coach Luis de la Fuente opted to leave teenage star Lamine Yamal on the bench as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury, while Nico Williams was introduced only late in the match.
Ranked 67th in the world, Cabo Verde impressed in their first-ever World Cup appearance, defending resolutely and frustrating their more illustrious opponents throughout the contest.

Spain created their best opportunities late in the first half. Ferran Torres struck the crossbar from a Marc Cucurella cross, while Cabo Verde goalkeeper Vozinha produced a series of important saves to deny Mikel Oyarzabal, Torres and Aymeric Laporte.
The introduction of Yamal in the second half injected urgency into Spain’s attack, but the breakthrough never arrived. The Barcelona winger helped create several openings, including a chance for Mikel Merino and another effort from Oyarzabal, yet Cabo Verde held firm.
The underdogs nearly secured a famous victory in the closing moments when Dani Borges met a cross with a header, but Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón made a comfortable save.
Spain will look to secure their first win when they face Saudi Arabia on Sunday, while Cabo Verde continue their impressive World Cup journey against Uruguay in Miami.
