Nigeria’s Super Eagles have fought back to beat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Uyo on Friday.
Madagascar took the lead after a quick transition caught Nigeria’s defence off guard.
However, Nigeria responded before the break through debutant George Ilenikhena.

The forward scored in the first minute of added time to make it 1-1.
The equaliser also marked a memorable start to Ilenikhena’s senior international career.
After the restart, the Super Eagles increased the pressure on Madagascar.
Captain Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi helped Nigeria control the midfield.
The pressure eventually paid off when another debutant, Moses Usor, scored the winning goal.
His second-half strike completed Nigeria’s comeback and secured all three points.
The victory gives Eric Chelle’s side a winning start to their Group L campaign.
Nigeria will next travel to face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29.
On the same day, Madagascar will host Tanzania in another Group L qualifier.
The Super Eagles began the campaign without Victor Osimhen.
The striker missed the opening qualifiers after being ruled out with an injury.

Nigeria now sit second in Group L with three points.
Guinea-Bissau also have three points but lead the group on goal difference.
Tanzania and Madagascar are currently without a point.
