A tanker carrying flammable liquids overturned south of the Central African Republic’s capital on Friday evening, killing at least eight people in the town of Bimbo.

Communications Ministry spokesman Evariste Ngamana confirmed the provisional toll in a statement on Saturday, adding that the crash injured 10 others and that the total casualties include both locals and motorists.

While official government reports list eight fatalities, a hospital source told AFP that the death toll is closer to 15.

Local authorities have opened a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
