Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has said President Bola Tinubu has approved lifetime salaries for retired Comptrollers-General and Deputy Comptrollers-General of Immigration and cleared promotion backlogs in services under his ministry.

Tunji-Ojo made the remarks on Friday at the closing ceremony of a specialised training programme on border control and immigration management at the Immigration Headquarters in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported. He said at least 50,000 personnel had received promotions and new positions within three years under Tinubu’s administration.

“It has never happened before, but Tinubu did it. He also increased the volume of recruitment, where we now have no fewer than 40,000 new recruits at once,” the minister said.

Tunji-Ojo also praised the President for approving salary increases and allowances for personnel, including hazard and peculiar allowances. He further highlighted Tinubu’s approval of lifetime salaries for retired Comptrollers-General and Deputy Comptrollers-General of Immigration, saying the move had improved their welfare.

“Previously, CGs had a pension of about N130,000; it was not encouraging. But what did the president do? He signed and approved salary for life for CGs and DCGs,” he said.

The minister described Tinubu as a leader who prioritised the welfare of serving and retired personnel. He also urged officers to repay the government’s support by performing their duties effectively.

“This president has cared for the services more than any president in the history of Nigeria. He has given you his all,” Tunji-Ojo said.

“And all he asks from us in the service is to do our jobs well and make Nigerians happy. Everything we have asked of him, he has done. This is the least we can do,” he added.

Tunji-Ojo said Tinubu’s policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda were designed to deliver lasting results beyond his time in office. He added that the President understood the importance of building strong institutions that would continue to serve Nigerians for generations.

“President Bola Tinubu has never been about the immediate, but the future. He understands that the most prosperous nations do not boil, cook, and eat their seeds; they plant them,” the minister said.

“What this president is doing is planting the seed so that the future will be abundant,” he added

Tunji-Ojo added that Tinubu had acknowledged he would not remain in office forever, but said the institutions being built should endure beyond his administration.
