Toronto police say the two people killed during a shooting at a music festival over the weekend were deliberately targeted, as authorities continue investigating the incident.

Police Chief Myron Demkiw identified the victims as two men aged 25 and 20 who were known to each other, adding that investigators do not believe they were randomly attacked.

Four other people were injured in the shooting, although police have not disclosed whether they had any connection to the deceased or provided details on possible suspects.

The gunfire erupted on Saturday night, sending thousands of festival-goers fleeing for safety as panic spread through the venue.

Toronto Mayor, Olivia Chow, condemned the violence and said she had spoken with the Canadian federal government about curbing the flow of illegal firearms entering the city from the United States.

Responding to questions about the source of the weapon used, Demkiw said between 85 and 90 per cent of crime guns recovered in Toronto and successfully traced originate from the United States, describing it as a long-standing trend.

Canadian authorities have consistently argued that most gun violence in the country is linked to illegally trafficked firearms from the US, citing Canada’s strict gun control laws.
