Trump Bans Some Canadian Goods, Raises Tariffs

The White House escalated its ongoing trade war with Canada late Tuesday by imposing an import ban on select goods and slapping a 50 per cent tariff on a wide array of products.

Under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, American importers will face 50 per cent surcharges on Canadian mattresses, motorboats, and golf carts starting September 15.

Additional executive orders enact a full import ban on Canadian alcoholic beverages and specific dairy items, such as whey, beginning September 29.

The punitive measures directly retaliate against Ottawa’s decision to impose fresh tariffs on US exports after bilateral trade negotiations collapsed last month.

Senior administration officials confirmed that Washington warned Canadian leaders against retaliation before carrying out the crackdown.

Trump specifically justified the alcohol ban by citing discriminatory Canadian provincial monopolies that removed American wines and spirits from retail shelves during widespread consumer boycotts.

Alongside the tariffs and import bans, Trump threatened to strip Canadian suppliers of access to long-term US government procurement contracts worth over $50 billion annually.

The administration instructed officials to purge Canadian-origin goods from the General Services Administration’s purchasing schedules unless Canada restores reciprocal trade access for American agricultural producers and businesses.

Legal experts warn this procurement ban could trigger far broader economic fallout than the direct product tariffs.
