United States President Donald Trump has vowed a forceful military response after Iran launched a missile attack targeting the country’s bases in Jordan, according to Fox News.
Fox News correspondent Jacqui Heinrich, quoting Trump, said the president promised Iran would face a severe response, stressing that the United States would retaliate with overwhelming force.
“We’ll be hitting them hard. They’re going to get a beating,” Fox’s correspondent quoted Trump as saying,
Trump also reportedly said overnight US-Saudi airstrikes against Iran-backed militias in Iraq were carried out in coordination with the Iraqi government, despite Baghdad publicly condemning the operation.
The Iraqi presidency said it “denounces the bombing that targeted the Hashed al-Shaabi bases and it considers it an unacceptable attack and a blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty, targeting its official institutions.”
The Iraqi government also reiterated its opposition to the use of its territory as a launchpad for attacks against neighbouring countries.
The latest escalation marks a sharp turn in the five-month confrontation between the United States and Iran, despite Trump’s earlier insistence that he preferred a negotiated resolution to the conflict.
Iran said it fired missiles at US military installations in Jordan, while Jordan’s military announced it intercepted five Iranian missiles before they reached their targets.
The joint air operation in Iraq followed attacks by what Saudi Arabia called “terrorist militias loyal to Iran” on its oil facilities. Riyadh had previously reported intercepting drones it said were launched by the groups.
The US military said logistics and weapons sites belonging to an Iran-aligned group were targeted in the Iraq strikes.
