The United States (US) President Donald Trump has called on FIFA to allow the United States to host another FIFA World Cup on its own, saying Canada and Mexico should be excluded from future bids.

Trump made the remark on Friday evening during a FIFA World Cup reception held at Trump Tower in New York City, ahead of Sunday’s final between Argentina and Spain.

Speaking directly to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Trump said: “You should choose the United States of America again. This time we will leave Canada and Mexico out.”

Trump joked that FIFA should “pick somebody else” to lead the organisation in the future to help reduce criticism directed at Infantino.

“Pick somebody else to take some of the anger, hatred and steam out of everyone,” he said.

However, FIFA has already chosen the hosts for the next edition of the tournament.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Trump also revisited the controversy surrounding US striker Folarin Balogun, whose red card during a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina was overturned after the president said he personally contacted Infantino.

The decision prompted criticism from football fans and led to allegations of favouritism and corruption.

Despite the backlash, Trump defended the move, calling it “unforgettable.”

“It was so much better the way it worked out because there’s no controversy; they won the game, and our team had all of its players,” he said.

He also praised Infantino for reversing the decision.

“You made another great decision… You’ll never get credit for it,” he added.

The World Cup final between Argentina and Spain will be played on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where Trump is expected to help present the championship trophy to the winners.
