Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has revealed a statue in honour of Nigeria’s renowned literary icon, Chinua Achebe, in his hometown of Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The monument, located at Ugwunwasike Roundabout, was unveiled on Saturday as part of efforts to preserve the legacy of the celebrated author.

Speaking at the event, Soludo described Achebe as a global symbol of excellence whose contributions to African literature and culture continue to inspire generations.

The governor said his administration remains committed to preserving the late novelist’s legacy while creating an environment that encourages the emergence of more literary talents in Anambra State.

“Achebe represents excellence and remains one of the world’s greatest literary figures. We will continue to support initiatives that inspire the emergence of more Achebes in Idemili North and Anambra State,” Soludo said.

The ceremony was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders and literary enthusiasts.

The Mayor of Idemili North Local Government Area, Stanley Nkwoka, described both Achebe and Soludo as world-class personalities whose achievements have brought honour to Anambra State.

Achebe is widely regarded as the father of modern African literature, with his 1958 novel Things Fall Apart gaining international acclaim after being translated into dozens of languages and adopted as a literary text across the world.

The new monument is expected to promote cultural heritage and literary tourism in Ogidi while preserving the enduring legacy of the late author.

Achebe died on March 21, 2013, at the age of 82 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, and was laid to rest in Ogidi on May 23, 2013.
