Dozens of people have been arrested in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following protests against proposed constitutional changes that would allow President Felix Tshisekedi to seek a third term.

The protests took place on Tuesday in Kinshasa and several other major towns.

According to Reuters, Police fired tear gas and warning shots in Kinshasa to disperse hundreds of agitators. Coalition Article 64 (C64), a broad opposition alliance, organised the demonstrations.

People waved flags from different opposition parties as they rejected the proposed constitutional amendments.

President Felix Tshisekedi has been in office since 2019. Under the current constitution, he is due to complete his second five-year term in 2028.

That would prevent him from seeking another term.

However, Tshisekedi said last month that he would consider a third term “if the people wish it”.

The proposed constitutional changes have therefore raised concerns among opposition groups.

In June, the DRC Senate passed a bill allowing referendums.

Police also violently dispersed the crowd after supporters and opponents of Tshisekedi clashed during demonstrations against the proposed changes.

C64 leader and former presidential candidate Martin Fayulu said the opposition was considering an international complaint.

He said the complaint would focus on violence against opposition activists during the protests. The latest demonstrations follow growing political tensions before the 2028 presidential election.

Tshisekedi’s government has faced continued opposition over proposed constitutional reforms and his possible bid for another term.
