Ugandan prosecutors agreed on Friday to extradite Katungi Michael Mpeirwe, a retired Ugandan army lieutenant, to the United States on charges of conspiring to supply heavy weaponry to Mexican drug cartels.

The US indictment alleges that Mpeirwe conspired to smuggle machine guns, rocket launchers, grenades, sniper rifles, and anti-aircraft weapons to criminal organisations, including the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG).

Mpeirwe previously served as a close associate of Ugandan army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni.

Kainerugaba dismissed Mpeirwe from his position as external affairs director after US authorities filed the indictment in July 2025.

According to the indictment from Virginia, Mpeirwe partnered with Bulgarian arms trafficker Peter Dimitrov Mirchev alongside Kenyan and Tanzanian nationals to route weapons from Bulgaria through Tanzania to the cartels.

US authorities previously arrested Mirchev in Spain in April 2025 and extradited him to the United States earlier this year.
