The United States has approved a potential $2.68 billion sale of air defence equipment and related services to Ukraine as Kyiv continues to seek additional support against Russian attacks.
The US State Department said on Friday that it had approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Ukrainian government covering air defence development upgrades, equipment and associated services.
According to the congressional notification, Ukraine has requested several types of military equipment, including missiles, launchers, counter-drone radars and trailers.
The proposed package is estimated to cost $2.68 billion and remains subject to review by the US Congress before the sale can be concluded.
The State Department said Ukraine would finance the potential purchase through a combination of contributions from European countries and US Foreign Military Financing that was appropriated during the previous administration.
“If the proposed purchase is concluded, Ukraine would finance it using a combination of European contributions and US Foreign Military Financing appropriated during the prior Administration,” the department said.
It added that the “estimated total cost is $2.68 billion.”
The proposed sale comes as Ukraine continues to face repeated Russian missile and drone attacks, particularly against major urban centres.
Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, has seen an increase in Russian strikes, putting additional pressure on its air defence systems. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly called for more air defence systems and ammunition to help protect cities and critical infrastructure.
The proposed US package would provide Ukraine with additional capabilities to detect and counter aerial threats, including drones and missiles.
Approval does not mean the sale is complete. Congress must review the proposal before the transaction can proceed, and the final scope and terms would depend on the outcome of the relevant procurement arrangements.
