US Lifts Sanctions on Eritrean Defence Forces

The Trump administration lifted sanctions on the Eritrean Defence Forces and other national entities on Friday, signalling a strategic shift to strengthen bilateral ties along the Red Sea shipping route.

The US Treasury Department announced the policy change on its website as expanding Middle East conflicts draw renewed American focus to the region.

Former US President Joe Biden originally imposed the sanctions in 2021 to penalise Eritrea’s ruling party, military leaders, and government officials for participating in the northern Tigray conflict alongside Ethiopian forces.

Neither Eritrea’s defence minister nor its information minister responded immediately to requests for comment.

Political analysts view the sanction removal as an effort by Washington to secure strategic partnerships near crucial international maritime corridors.
