The World Health Organisation (WHO) confirmed on Thursday that medical workers detected a case of Marburg virus disease in Uganda.

Health officials discovered the lethal pathogen during an intensified, ongoing surveillance campaign originally targeting an Ebola outbreak in the region.

WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the development during a press conference in Geneva, assuring the public that Ugandan health authorities are actively monitoring all identified contacts of the patient.

He noted that none of the monitored individuals has shown symptoms of the disease so far.
